WHERE IT BEGAN
Terry McClellan left Turner Construction after 10 years of service to begin his own company, McClellan Construction in Columbus, Ohio. Terry’s goal was to provide a better service for his clients.
The company hired its first employee, John Earnheart in September, 1978.
MAKING A SPLASH
McClellan Construction moved into 1290 Norton Ave. This building would be home to the company for the first 18 years. The building eventually became a studio for an underground movie company after Miles•McClellan moved out.
McClellan Construction completed their first project. The project was the $92,000 renovation of the Grandview Swimming Pool with Wandel & Schnell Architects.
A NEW BEGINNING
Lonnie Miles decided to leave Turner Construction after 6 years of service to start his own company, Concept Construction. Lonnie’s office was located in the same building as McClellan Construction.
COMPLETING A FIRST
Concept Construction completed its first contract. This contract was with Columbus School for Girls for $184,980.
COMMUNITY RECOGNITION
Concept Construction and McClellan Construction jointly were awarded the Ohio Public Works Contractor of the Year Award for their combined effort on 3 projects: Columbus Fire Station #1 located at Nationwide and Fourth, Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commissions’ Headquarters on Main Street, and North Central Community Mental Health Center’s new location on High Street.

GROWING STRONGER
McClellan Construction started up Satellite Construction. McClellan Construction was a union company and Satellite Construction was its non-union sister company.
BUILDING MOMENTUM
Satellite Construction lands and completes 2 projects for 2 Ohio universities; the Rio Grands Math and Science Center, and Hocking Technical College Student Center.
FRANCHISING
Bonanza is a product line of wooden pole barns. McClellan Construction took over the Columbus franchise. Hankus was the first Bonanza project completed for $59,598.
PRISON BREAK!
While working at the London Correctional Facility, Matt McClellan (currently President) manages to have his bolt cutters stolen. The bolt cutters were found 3 hours later, after the prison was locked down and searched.
NAME CHANGE
Concept Construction changes its name to Miles Construction. The company completes the Front Street Tunnel.
THE MERGER
Miles Construction and McClellan Construction formally merge operations and start to perform work for their clients as Miles•McClellan Construction Co., Inc.
MASONRY DIVISION
After experiencing success in self-performed concrete work, the company begins its masonry operation. The goal by self performing concrete and masonry is to control the critical early stages of the project.
Miles•McClellan completed the Scioto Downs Clubhouse expansion. This was an exciting renovation that helped the race track’s resurgence in the Columbus area.
CHANGING FOCUS
Miles•McClellan changed its primary focus from public works construction to work for private companies. While the firm’s volume was cut in half, within one year satisfied clients started to offer repeat work. After many years of nurturing a relationship, Miles•McClellan wins a job with Coca-Cola Syrup Plant in Columbus, Ohio. Our first project was a $2 Million line renovation. The success of the line renovation leads to $30 Million in total plant renovation and expansion over a 13 year period.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Miles•McClellan begins a 14 year relationship with National City Bank when hired to build their new branch location in Hilliard, Ohio.
The CCAD Joseph Canzani Center is completed successfully under budget. The final budget was more than $1 Million under the college’s original budget.
AWARD WINNING
Miles•McClellan wins its first of 13 consecutive safety awards as presented by the Associated Builders and Contractors. The last award won was in 2008, the Gold Leaf Award.
SOLID ADDITIONS
Miles•McClellan successfully adds the 3rd story to the Canzani Center, originally completed in 1994. The addition was successfully accomplished without any leaks to the levels below. The College’s art exhibition space is located on the levels below. Any water damage would have destroyed the students’ pieces.
A NEW HOME
On February 14, 1997, Miles•McClellan moved to 2100 Builders Place Columbus, Ohio. It's our current location and corporate headquarters.
PUBLIC TRANSIT
Miles•McClellan completes the COTA Linden Transit Center. The Linden Transit Center was a $2.4 Million federally funded design/build project.
TEAM WORK
Miles•McClellan was part of the team that built the $140 Million Nationwide Arena. This arena is home to the Columbus Bluejackets.
Tim McClellan was the first graduate of the Miles•McClellan Management Training Program. Tim successfully moved from Project Engineer/Estimator to Project Manager to Operations Manager and now is the Vice President/General Manager of our North Carolina division.
RENOVATION SUCCESSES
Miles•McClellan was hired by the Bexley City School District to complete a $30 Million renovation project. The Cassingham and Maryland schools were renovated, proving to be one of the most difficult renovations in the state of Ohio.
FOUR STAR EXECUTION
Miles•McClellan was hired to build the YMCA Suburban Expansion –Y facilities in Hilliard, Grove City, Gahanna and East Columbus.
Miles•McClellan completed The Ohio State University Blackwell Inn – a four star hotel on the OSU campus. The 8-story building was completed on time and on budget.
MILESTONE MARKERS
Management succession planning starts as Matt McClellan assumes the role as President, Tim McClellan the role of Vice President of Operations and Gregory L. Hall becomes Chief Financial Officer. Both of the owners continue to work as Lonnie Miles moves into the new CEO role and Terry McClellan continues to do what he loves as the Director of Pre-Construction Services.
Don Johnson, long time Superintendent, becomes the first, and only to date, employee to retire from Miles•McClellan. He started in July 1981 and official retired in March 2003 after finishing the renovation of the ARC Industries Headquarters on Johnstown Rd.
A COMMUNITY FIRST
Miles•McClellan completed the North Bank Park for the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks. The North Bank project was the first where the river was moved to allow for more pedestrian access downtown.
CLIENT SATISFACTION
Miles•McClellan completed the $100 Million Ohio State University Biomedical Research Tower. Within the same year the $74,000 window replacement project at Mount Carmel West was also completed. Client satisfaction is Miles•McClellan’s main priority, no matter the size of the project.
AMERICAN HONDA
Miles•McClellan completed the first of many projects for American Honda Motor Co., a $25 Million distribution facility. The facility was completed a month ahead of schedule and under budget. This project has since been awarded the ABC Excellence in Construction Eagle Award from the ABC’s Ohio Chapter. More importantly, the facility is LEED Gold Certified.
The success of the facility leads to Miles•McClellan’s move into North Carolina. This is where Miles•McClellan began construction of the Honda Aircraft Office Building and R&D Facility.
VISION 2020
Miles•McClellan announces a 12 year plan at its annual meeting, 2020 Vision. The new plan is to grow to become a $250 Million regional powerhouse located in 4 states.
Miles•McClellan opens its first branch office in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tim McClellan accepts the role as Vice President/General Manager of the branch. This is a giant step toward the 2020 Vision.
TRAINING FUTURE SUCCESS
Miles•McClellan is very proud of its Management Training Program. 4 team members have successfully completed our program and 11 new team members are currently enrolled. The success of our in-house training program guarantees that our team understands our definition of quality. This ensures the success of every project we take on.
